Your keys security

Get insights for your keys' security: guard seed phrases, use hardware signers, keep encrypted backups, and adopt lantern-lit custody habits.

“Not your keys, not your coins” means that control over private keys equals control over cryptocurrency. The blockchain records who owns what, and wallets do not hold funds. A wallet only stores the private key that proves you can move coins from an address. Each address has a key pair with a public key for identification and a private key for authorization. The private key is the secret code that allows spending. Anyone who knows that secret can take the funds. Giving away your private key is the same as handing over your money. Custodial services keep private keys for you. That means they can set rules about your funds. They can suspend withdrawals, change fees, or fail in ways that leave you without access. Centralized failures, hacks, and insolvency have all shown this risk. Scams also target private keys. Phishing, fake apps, and social engineering try to trick people into revealing their keys or seed phrases. If your seed phrase is exposed, attackers can access many accounts at once. Protecting keys is simple in idea and hard in practice. Self-custody means you control the private keys. Hardware signers or hardware wallets keep keys offline and away from internet-connected devices. These devices sign transactions without revealing the key itself. They act as a secure bridge between you and the blockchain. A signer proves intent without holding value. It verifies that you approved a transaction before it is broadcast. Secure hardware often uses isolated chips to resist tampering. That protects against remote hacks and some physical attacks. But nothing is perfectly safe. You must still follow good habits. Never share your private key or seed phrase with anyone. Never enter your seed phrase into a website or a cloud service. Keep multiple, encrypted backups of your seed phrase in separate physical locations. Consider using a passphrase to add an extra layer of protection. Update device firmware from official sources when needed. Practice transactions with small amounts first to learn the workflow. Treat custody as both a right and a responsibility. Owning your keys gives you freedom and power. It also demands vigilance, patience, and humility. The technology rewards care and punishes shortcuts. Remember that true digital ownership lives with the person who holds the private key, and that truth remains the foundation of crypto security.
