Segregate Crypto Assets
Insights on segregating crypto assets: mint, sell, vault. Lock keys offline and revoke approvals. Shrink blast radius; survive the chaos.
Asset segregation is a simple and powerful strategy to protect crypto holdings by splitting them into separate accounts for different uses. Keep your private keys offline as the basic defense. But offline keys do not stop every danger. The real risk often comes when you grant a smart contract permission to act on your wallet. A single signed transaction can give a malicious contract access to everything in that account. For that reason you should use three distinct accounts with clear roles. First, a mint account holds only small sums and is used for interacting with new or unaudited contracts. Second, a sell account is for trading and approvals on trusted marketplaces and exchanges and should carry only assets you intend to move soon. Third, a vault account stores your long-term valuables and must not sign regular approvals or risky transactions. Use a hardware wallet to create and manage these accounts so your keys remain offline by default. Remember that a cold wallet stops being fully cold the moment you give it broad contract approvals. Treat approvals like keys and revoke anything you no longer need. Regularly check permissions and use permission-revocation tools to remove dangerous access. Many people also use temporary burner addresses for risky mints and then transfer new assets to the vault for safekeeping. This reduces exposure and limits any single failure to a small loss. Scams thrive on user interaction, not just on code exploits. A well-crafted fake pop-up can trick anyone into signing a harmful transaction. If you organize your funds ahead of time, a single mistake will not empty all your accounts. Think of segregation as an insurance policy for your digital life. Label each account clearly and document its purpose so mistakes become less likely. Keep your mint address light and isolated. Keep your sell address tidy and only approve what you need to trade. Keep your vault untouched by routine approvals and use it only for secure transfers. Above all, stay curious and vigilant. In the vast night of Web3, hope can be a guiding star and careful account design is the map that helps you travel safely among it.
