Crypto custody in India

Judgment looms; get sober insights on crypto custody in India, practical signer guidance, secure recovery, and resilient risk steps.

Crypto custody is the act of controlling the keys that control your coins, and in India it sits at the crossroads of law, risk, and personal sovereignty. The country allows ownership and trading, yet the rules and taxes are evolving, so custody decisions must be deliberate. Centralized exchanges make buying easy, but leaving large balances there exposes you to hacks, operational failure, and third‑party freezes. Self‑custody means you hold the private keys yourself, typically on a hardware device or signer, and that changes the game because these devices do not hold value; they sign transactions and prove intent. A signer isolates the secret material from the internet, and that limits attack surfaces. Good custody practice begins with choosing a reliable signer and creating a secure recovery phrase. Write the phrase on physical media and store copies in different safe locations. Do not store recovery data on connected devices or cloud services. Use a strong PIN and enable any available passphrase option for added layered security. Keep firmware and software up to date, but verify updates from official sources to avoid impostor packages. When transacting, always verify the destination address on the signer itself, and avoid pasting unverified addresses from web pages. Treat exchanges as trading venues, not vaults; keep only what you need for active trading on an exchange and move the rest to self‑custody. Consider splitting holdings across multiple signers or wallets to reduce single‑point risk. For tax and compliance in India, remember that crypto profits are taxed at a flat rate and a separate tax‑deduction‑at‑source applies to transfers, so record every trade and every movement out of exchanges for accurate reporting. Mining income is taxable too, and usual expense offsets may be limited. Losses from crypto cannot necessarily offset other gains, so manage risk accordingly. Custody is also political because control over keys shifts power from institutions to individuals, and that creates friction with regulators who seek oversight. Expect the legal framework to change, and design custody practices that remain resilient to new rules. Finally, custody is personal responsibility; it demands discipline, backups, and periodic review. Protect your keys, verify every action, and treat the signer as the last line of defense for your digital wealth.
