Ledger migration: create fresh offline keys and one signer address per asset. Verify addresses on device and never import online keys.
Private keys are the secret code that opens every doorway to your blockchain assets. In this new world the key hums, a small sound you feel more than hear. Think of a private key as a ghostly signature that proves you own an address. If that signature ever touches the internet it can be copied. Software wallets keep keys on connected devices, and that makes them easier to use but also easier to steal. Hardware wallets, or signers, generate keys offline and keep them away from prying fingers and malware. A signer does not hold coins, it only signs transactions and proves your intent. If a key was ever online you cannot make it safe again by importing it into a signer. The only true safety is a new key that was born offline and has never been exposed. When you migrate assets, create a fresh address on the signer for each separate asset. Use one new address per asset to avoid cross-chain confusion. Copy the receiving address from the signer and confirm it on the device’s trusted display so you see it in a place attackers cannot change. Send each asset from your software wallet to its new address and accept that network fees are part of the process. Never enter a recovery phrase generated by a hot wallet into an offline device. That recovers access but not security. Back up your recovery phrase when the signer creates it, write it down on paper or other durable media, and store that backup in a secure location that you control. Treat the recovery phrase like the key to a safe, and not like a password to share. Consider using an air-gapped workflow or watch-only accounts when you need to view balances without risking keys. Keep software up to date on the devices you use to interact with the signer, and prefer direct verification on the hardware display for every transaction. Signers can safely interact with decentralized apps through secure integrations or standard middleware, because signing happens inside the offline device and never exposes private keys. Education is part of security; learn about phishing, fake sites, and social engineering so you do not hand your seed phrase to a scammer.
