At the same time, the model raises acute legal and ethical issues. Biometric markers are immutable, so any leak or repurposing creates permanent risk. Centralized control of verification infrastructure can concentrate power and enable surveillance. In jurisdictions with weak data protection, biometric databases can be weaponized against dissidents or vulnerable groups. Adoption also faces friction because the utility must outweigh privacy concerns and because many apps do not yet accept these identity attestations. A further paradox appears when verified identities are used to authorize autonomous agents. Delegation lets bots act with human-backed credentials and thus blurs the original purpose of proving a human at the endpoint. This invites complex questions about accountability and liability. Practical mitigations exist and should be standard. Systems must avoid storing raw biometric images and must rely on one-way identifiers and threshold cryptography. Processing on personal devices and hardware-backed keys reduces central points of failure. Open protocols, independent audits, and transparent governance limit abuse. Legal safeguards should ban repurposing for surveillance and require data minimization, targeted retention, and clear revocation paths. Complementary methods such as behavioural proofs, social attestations, and hardware tokens can reduce reliance on biometrics. Ultimately, proof-of-human identity is not a purely technical product. It is an infrastructural policy choice that must balance bot resistance and inclusion against privacy, decentralization, and fundamental rights. Robust design, strong oversight, and interoperable standards will determine whether such systems protect people or empower new forms of control.
