A modular blockchain is a focused ledger that splits the classic chores of a monolithic chain into separate layers to escape the trade-offs of the blockchain trilemma. The trilemma says a chain can aim for decentralization, security, and scalability, but excelling at one often forces concessions in the others. Monolithic chains bundle execution, settlement, consensus, and data availability into one stack, and that bundling makes scaling costly and centralized in practice. Data availability means that transaction data is recorded on-chain and accessible so anyone can audit the history and verify state transitions. On a monolithic chain every full node must store all data, and that requirement raises the hardware bar and shrinks the pool of independent validators. Modular designs instead assign each task to a specialist layer and let execution layers focus only on computing transactions. A data-availability layer concentrates on consensus and making data provably available to the network, and rollups or other execution layers publish their transaction data there. To keep node requirements light, the network uses erasure coding to spread redundancy and data availability sampling so light nodes can query random samples and detect missing data with high certainty. This approach lets many more nodes verify availability without downloading whole blocks. The result is higher throughput for execution layers without sacrificing decentralization or security. Developers gain freedom because they can deploy custom rollups that choose their own virtual machines and settlement policies while relying on a common availability layer. Interoperability improves because multiple execution chains can publish proofs to the same availability layer and thus indirectly validate each other. Native tokens in such systems typically secure consensus through staking, fund data availability fees, and enable governance, which aligns incentives across participants. The model is still new and must prove resilience under real-world stress, and some blockchains that kept monolithic stacks have already optimized for high throughput, so competition remains fierce. Ambitions include supporting much larger block payloads, enabling millions of rollups, and running secure light nodes on ordinary mobile devices. In short, modular blockchains peel away unnecessary duties from the base layer, and by doing so they offer a technically elegant and politically sharp remedy to the scale-versus-ethos dilemma that has long constrained decentralized systems.
